Hey all...I bought a few sailfin mollies a while ago and I loved them so much I had to get some Balloon ones as well. Since both kinds are supposed to be peaceful, and they're all Mollies, I figured I'd be ok adding them together. I did make sure to keep the 1 Male / 2 Female ratio (So I have 1 Male, 2 Female Sailfins and 1 Male, 2 Female Balloons).

I've noticed the Male Sailfin has taken a keen interest in either stressing - or trying to mate - with the Balloons. The poor male can quite often be found hiding out in a cave or somewhere else in the tank away from every one else...and sometimes it seems as though he has labored breathing. The other fish I bought from the same tank in the same store at the same time seem fine.

I'm wondering if maybe the Male Sailfin is stressing out the Male Balloon, and if so, should I add more females to the tank to help divert his attention?

they will mate with any form. how many female mollies and male mollies do you have? i personally like 1-3 ratios

Not only will they mate, but my males don't ever seem to stop, even to take a breath!! I have many mollies that are very distinct. I try to have one of every type. I have several ballon mollies that are about to give birth. The only males in the tank are sailfin's and lyretail's. So, the answer is a definite yes :)

yeah they either look really cool or really bad x.x depending on your taste that is. a lfs by me has all sorts. i personally like the sailfin lyretails :fun:
