what is the difference between mollies and platies?

There is virtually no difference. They look a little different but right now I have mollies and platys and I haven't noticed any difference. I will warn you that if you have a male and a female you will get babies for sure. There is no stopping it. So if you don't want baby's get either just males or just females. I would suggest just getting males because I have noticed they are less aggressive.

Mollies are bigger and have wider faces/mouths. They grow bigger, too. Platies are cooler than mollies. Thats the difference. Lol
Oh yeah and mollies only come in white, black, white w black spots, cream.

Platies can breed with swordtails ultimately giving them endles color possibilities.

I agree with lolo. Platies are better :p
The main difference is size. . They can grow very big, upto 4/5 inches long. I saw huge sail fins in my LFS, I couldn't believe they were mollies, only because we are just used to seeing the little ones! My 95L isn't big enough for them or I would have got them. I find mollies to get territorial and need a big well established tank.
A good point in mollies is they can't cross breed with anything. Guppies and mollies are the same family but the genetic make up is different so cannot cross breed. There was a study conducted to see whether claims of guppy/molly hybrids were true. It resulted in a fail.
I'm rambling on now but for your smaller everyday aquarium I would recommend platies. Like lolobunnz said, they can breed with swordtails.
