hey guys...
about 1 or 2 months ago i got 3 mollies
1 female dalmation
1 female balloon molly
1 male molly [ i dont know what type it is tho]
well i heared that mollies breed alot but my mollies havent had fry at all and i dont know why..they r in a tank with 4 other tetras and just last night i saw the male guppy chase the female baloon molly around and then it stuck its anal fin [at least i think its his anal fin -_- ] into he but lol....
well i think my balloon molly is pregnant as it had black dots on her belly..but then again shes had them ever since we got her! well ive noticed some more near her back fin and im not sure if its her gravid spot because ive only seen what a gravid sport looks like on a GUPPY.....

so if anyone has any pics of a molly with a gravid spot could you please post em
and if anyone knows why my fish arent breeding could u please tell me!!!

thankyou for any help u give!!

and..ill post some pics of her later...i just cant get 1 clear 1 of her "gravid spot"

Since you have a good ratio, there are two options as to why they aren't breeding.
  1. They are stressed out by something else
  2. They actually had fry, but the fry were eaten by the other fish/themselves.
If they're stressed out by something else: What are your water stats? What size is your tank? And I'm guessing you are not keeping them in slightly brackish?

If the fry are being eaten: Look into a small fry tank to put pregnant females in. Or add in more plants, especially floating ones, for the fry to hide in.

Mollies' gravid spots are tough. Some won't show a gravid spot. Some will. It looks basically like a Guppy's, except it may not be as pronounced.

Good luck!

Thankyou SO much for your help...well i know my dads not going to let me get a fry tank so maybe i will get some more plants!!

so now i have a new problem...the man keeps sucking on the females belly near what i think is her gravid spot =S im not sure why hes doing this i dont think its mating :p but could it be that hes trying to make the female abort the pregnancy because thats what i read on this website? thankyou for your help!!

hi
if your mollie starts looking quite fat then she will be pregnant ive also found that just before they drop babies they start to look very 'boxy' as in square shaped when you see them from the front or the back. i have black mollies & there is no way you will ever see a gravid spot on them but i can just tell by her shape and so far im usually right
good luck

Sheesh! I can't stop mine from breeding, even if I wanted to! I've got Dalmation mollies, both females have had a batch of fry, the strongest/sneakiest of which have survived (good old Darwin) The females both got appreciably larger when they were ready to drop, with that distinctly boxy look to them...The fry quickly developed the distinct black and white pattern that distinguished them from Gupps...The other female is now pregnant again! (Male is a randy little sod) - I'll have to donate you some fry! lol

Hope you get them sorted :) Half the pleasure of keeping mollies is finding mini-mollies!...

Cheers

Poorly F&I
