helppppp! one of my girl mollies has got popeye just on her left side......ive isolated her in the hosp tank with some salt & melafix, is there anything else i can do for her??? im also concerned cos she seems a little stressed in the hosp tank swimming madly when ollie mollie (the male) comes near - the hosp tank is right up next to our main tank. i thought shed be glad to get away from the annoying bugger (mr mollie) but this does not seem to be so she seems to be missing him!!!. all tank params normal ie: 0 ammonia,0nitrite,15 nitrate,pH7.8.. she has no other symptoms that ive seen in other fish with popeye ie: swollen, pinecone dropsy type symptoms & her poo (sorry) seems normal.
any advice suggestions please - & most helpful i dont want to lose miss smiley mollie ( sad i know but she has a really smiley face :D )
thanks

I have had great luck treating popeye with Tetracycline. Also Maracyn 1 & 2. You could try either of those meds. They both need to be dosed for 5 days, and you need to do water changes before you put a dose in. If you don't want to go for those stronger meds, MelaFix MAY work...but I personally don't like it. Just make sure to keep the water SPARKLY clean when you are treating, as the most common cause of pop-eye is bad water quality when they don't have other symptoms like you mentioned.. Also, do water changes to get your nitrates down...they are a little high, :)

hi & thanks -unfortunately we cant get the meds you mentioned here in the uk (cant buy any antibiotics without vet prescription) our nitrates are also always high here in london due to the crappy tap water -,(it comes out higher than 15 on a regular basis) ,no matter what we do. but i will keep her separate for the moment & keep the hosp tank v clean & maybe look for a med i can get here( its a real pain not being able to get the stuff you guys over there can)
thanks :)

Oops, sorry, silly me.

Okay, what I would do is keep the water very very clean, and keep treating with salt and MelaFix. Water Changes everyday are pretty much needed. If she doesn't get better with that, you can look around for some medication you get over there. :)

Salt is a bad idea for your tank as you have many salt intolerant fish with your mollys, but there is a med called "Anti internal bacteria" by Interpet that will treat pop eye amoungst other things and is available in the UK and you should be able to get it at any decent lfs(local fish store) :) .

I don't think she has salt in her main tank, Toxis. I think she just put it in her hospital tank.

But that's a good med recommendation. I've heard it works pretty well from some of my UK friends. :)
