Hullo,

Am I right in thinking that mixing cichlids from the same Genus is a bad idea?
I shouldn't, for instance, put Hajomaylandia in a tank with my estherae?

Mind you it would appear that Hajomaylandia have 3 different genus name? Mylandia, Psedutropheus, and Metriaclima.
What's all that about?

Thanks

Generally you want to avoid adding species from the same genus, Labidochromis species are notorious for hybridizing. However, if you stock with species that look nothing alike, and make sure you have several females for each male you shouldn't have a problem.

Just remember hybrids can occur with mbuna regardless of what genus.

And to clear the confusion on the hajomaylandi. The genus Maylandia was replaced with Metriaclima, so whenever you see Maylandia listed some one just hasn't updated their lists. The hajomaylandi was originally name Pseudotropheus greberi after diver that worked for a well known exporter, it has since been renamed Metriaclima hajomaylandi. Welcome to the wonderful world of cichlid naming and renaming.

Thanks.

Wow, I love all the fascinating nerdery that cichillids involve, splendid!

I read the story of the first yellow labs the other day, a gripping tale of deceit and skulldugery.

dthoffsett, how do you know so much, your like the cichlid guru?!

 Thank you. Lots and lots of research. It's how I like to learn things, find a subject that interests me then research it to death and move on. Fortunately there's always something new coming out with cichlids and I haven't gotten bored yet.

I'm a blithering idiot compared to Ferris or most of the people on cichlid-forum, not too many mbuna keepers at TFF so it makes me sound smart.
