Hi all!

I have two generations of krib fry at the moment....

1st set of 11....approx 3 and a half months old....

2nd set of approx 25ish..... not sure of exact age... still together in a tank just with parents but are now becoming independant and making their own way around....

Question 1: can i put the two generations together?? (when im sure the youngesters are too big to be eaten..)

Question 2: if i can put the generations together i assume the parents will need moving out into different tanks??? they wont all play happy families together will they???

thank you!! :D

Not sure about question 1 as i have never tried it however regarding question 2:

I moved one batch of krib babbies over to my small tank and left the parents in my main tank after about a month and a half after the eggs hatching. What i hadnt realised at first was that i had missed a couple and it wasnt until the parents had another batch of fry on the go that i noticed them becoming very hostile toward the two of the original brood i hadnt re-tanked. Although they did not seem to actually bite they darted at them very violently until they had made sure they were out of the territory around their cave where they had the new fry. The two i had missed became very stressed until they discovered there were a couple of areas of the tank that they could safely hide in and i eventually gave them to my brother rather than take the risk of having them die of stress.

In terms of the adolescents i have some that are about 4months old now and only the males seem to b territorial at the moment although if u provide plenty of caves the males will spend much of the time inside thus reducing the likelyhood of them seeing the other males and causing too much stress to the other fish. I would b interested to know what happens if u do decide to combine generations though ;)

So yes, imo, u should remove the parents or remove the fry after they become independant as the parents will become aggressive toward them when they decide to breed again. Well unless u think ur tank is sufficiently big enough for the fry to have space outwith the territory of the parents.

thanks for the reply

:D

i think i'll maybe leave it another couple of weeks until im happy with the size of the youngesters...then try it carefully!! the problem i've got is that the 11 older ones are in a smaller grow out tank which they're beginning to get a bit big for and the parents and smaller fry are in a bigger tank... my mum would go spare if i set up another tank so i'm just figuring out the best solution...i could move the seperate the parents into different community tanks (dont want them together in community incase they cause choas!! or have more fry!).... then try both sets of fry in the larger tank.... i guess i can only try....then if it works i'll have a long term solution for future fry...

I mix different generations together all the time. As long as the newer batch are big enuff not to get eaten they will all be fine together. Once the parent fish decide to spawn again, its wise to remove the fry anyway as the parents will basically disown them after they spawn again, and will fiercely chase them off.
