I have a 30 gallon long and was wondering do you need 2-3 of each species to have a 3-4 species tank? IS it to cut down agression or do people just like the looks? I know some species the males and females look like almost different species. So it won't be a huge problem I just wnated to know. :good:

Unfortunately 30gal just isn't large enough for any of the cichlids from Lake Malawi, you could however keep several species from Lake Tanganikya, or some of the Riverine species.

I forgot to mention I was looking into lake tang. cichlids.

I've never kept Tangs myself, however, from what I've read, most of the smaller species are recommend to be kept in pairs. Shelldwellers should be kept in harems, 1m/3 or more females.

Here are a couple of links (just scroll down to see the Tang suggestions) one is for a 20gal and the other for a 29, you could just add a few more fish, but hopefully it will give you some ideas.
