is it bad?

i have 2 fully grown male johanni and wanted to add an auratus but im sure i read somewhere you should only have one type of melanochromis specie per tank

i know my johanni can be nasty buggers

any advice?

Auratus are tooo agressive and territorial. There was just someone else saying they took a Jonhanni back b/c of auratus bullying(they should've take back the aratus instead). I've read not to put Auratus in less than a 125 gallon tank. They've been know to claim half a decent sized (55 or 75 gallon tank) for their own territory. And I believe the people that have experienced it that say "No good can come from that" as they will defend against any fish. The others won't have enough room for territories and there would probably be death and mayhem.

I wasn't clear was I???

On a serious note, I wouldn't put auratus in.

Too high a risk for hybrid offspring, no matter what two Melanochromis species you choose. Wouldn't do it. Melanochromis although beautiful, are too aggressive for large numbers in a small tank..and by small I mean under 180 gallons.

Whoa!

Melanachromis are a good example of Malawis that don't take to others that look similar; e.g. Auratus don't take too kindly to Johanis who don't take too kindly to Damonsoni etc etc Its called 'con-specific' aggression. They might look different to us... Anything with similar colouration / markings / body shape just sends these guys over the top. They are all EQUALLY aggresive. If you really wanted to try your luck, you could also add a Red Top Hongi, then the feathers would really fly! :X
