hi there, i went for a meal last night and they had a tank setup with tufa rock, it was really what you would see in an african cichlid setup, stocked with lots of tufa rock and with sand.

but what was weird was the stock, they had about 5 different kind of cichlids ranging from electric yellows to the electric blue ones, which is fine. But they also had 3-4 parrot fish in there too, can this setup work? because if it does this is how im gonna decorate my tank.

i just need some advising on this

thanks

NOTHINGS WRONG WITH IT EXCEPT THE HYBRED FACTOR...
AND THE FACT THAT THE FISH ARE FROM CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA...
DIFFERENT WATER PARAMETERS ARE NEEDED FOR OPTIMUM LIFE OF THE FISH.
SOME BOZO EERRR I MEAN SOMEBODY WENT TO THE LFS AND SAID "I WANT ONE OF THOSE, ONE OF THOSE AND OOOO THOSE PURDY THINGIES"
TAKE OUT THE PARROTS AND YOU'VE GOT A NICE, COLORFUL TANK!

soo sorry for the caps, i reread and saw it :(

i like the parrots thou :D they are a lovely colour :D

thanks for the reply

Malawi and Parrots do not mix j@mie. AS mamafish has already said they are from completely different continents.

if its the colour you are after then have alook at Metriaclima Estherae (Red Zebras).....

an Mbuna with colour (orange) more stunning than any parrot.

in the long run, parrot fish would not be adequately able to compete for food. you've seen those bunched up little mouths they have? africans have much bigger, more capable mouths. africans are also more streamlined and more able to swim quickly. the parrots would never be able to get their fair share of the food and you'd really overfeed your africans in the process of getting enough food to the parrots.

optimum pH for most africans is around 8 while optimum pH for most new worlds (like parrots) is around 6. a pH of 6 is a hundred times more acidic than a pH of 8! while both can be adjusted to non-optimal conditions, you won't get the best results from your tank.

while i suppose it could be done with very careful choice of the african species, that doesn't mean it should be done.

A lot of factors are involved, but I wouldn't jump the gun into thinking it's so easy to make it work. Were the fish in this tank adults? What exactly constitutes 'Africans"? This covers a really broad range of fish and means little. How big was this tank? How long have they had it set up?
