I have in the last three months set up a thirty gallon tropical tank with various species living in it, the tank has a four stage filtration system with the bio rings, carbon drip screen etc. I am doing a ten percent change once a week and adding the recommended cycle, I have a misty green tint to the water, not bad but it gets pretty hazy looking from one end of the tank to the other. I have tried an additive to kill any floating algae, cleaned the glass and done all of the regular maintainance on the filtration system, but I just cant seem to shake this mist! I tried a 20 percent change last week but this still didnt alter anything. I have also done all of the chemical water tests such as nitrates, ammonia, ph, etc, all of this seems perfect, please help as this is my first tank set up and I am starting to become worried. Thanks everyone!!

I had the exact same problem... Since I had recently just put up the aquarium, debris was floating around, (wood really discolours the water). In time, the color went back to normal... just change the water like you are and keep the filter running, and it will soon come to an end! (or at least for me) B)

I had a very similar problem in a 28gal tank (UK) the water sometimes looked a bit 'hazy' although I wouldnt say ithad a green tint. I couldnt really clear it up, but since adding a 9w UV steriliser to the tank it has cleared up and is now crystal clear.

Not sure where you are, but ebay (UK) has some for less than £30 and as they also help reduce the chance of disease/infection and algae it seemed like a good addition to the tank. Especially as I have shrimp in mine, so can some medications are off limits !

Do you use tap water? if so then have you checked you phospate level as a high level will cause this problem.

How strong is your lighting? If there are no live plants and the lighting is strong flourescence, and/or its in strong sunlight....that's most of your problem.
