On Saturday I purchased a Red Tail Black Shark for my 29gal tank. All I have in the tank right now are 5 Tiger Barbs. It seemed happy and fine and the Barbs left it alone. The "shark" left the barbs alone as well. This morning I woke up for work and couldn't find it so I thought it was just hiding. When I got back from work I looked all over and still couldn't find it so I started taking things out like the cave it used to hang out in. It wasn't anywhere, I even checked all around on the floor, even though there's a lid on the tank. I decided to check the filter and took it out and inside found what looked to be a stomach. I'm only guessing that my barbs ate him over night.
My question is, would Tiger Barbs out of nowhere eat an entire fish? Or do you think the Red Tail had died through the night and they just ate the body then? There are no other signs in the tank, like bones or flesh or anything! I know they have a reputation for fin nipping, but a whole fish? Lastly, if they did eat it, how long should I wait to feed them again as they probably ate way more than they should have with that fish. Thanks for the help guys!
