I recently purchased a male platy and i noticed that one of his side fins is completely torn away. It looks like he may have had fin rot at some point and it ate the fin away. He moves it only once in a while. i had him in a quarantine tank (for new fish) with no ammonia levels with a male swordtail. could he have had fin rot at one point in his life? or did the other male nip it off?

there were no females in the tank and the platy doesn't look to have any other signs of fin rot

Its entirely plausable to say he still has the finrot, i would start medicating him with an anti finrot med like "anti finrot and fungus" by Interpet straight away, the fin should grow back though if it was taken away by desease or injury  .
