hiya,

set up my tank just under a month ago, 24g nano, interpet river reef 50, and got 2 clowns (occelaris) about 1 inch long. Tank was initially set up with about 7/8kg (18lb) of LR, but last week i added about 2-3kg of rubble into the filter to replace the ceramics, as well as about another 3kg to the main display, including a big piece cos of the xenia it had growing on it.

However, i got home today and checked the tank (rock work wasn't massively stable and some pieces fell down in the earthquake we had over here in England, but nothing major) but when i'd put it all back together, i realised that i only had one clown. I'v checked for about an hour for any sign of carpet surfing, but couldn't find anything. i assumed it may hav been hiding, ue to work in tank etc and it being the shy one, but then this evening i saw some movement in the tank and it turned out to be a large darkish crab, about 1 1/2 to 2" across the carapiece, and, although this is mere prejudic i admit, it looked evil, like a regular crab, with large pincers for its size.

i already hav 2 hermits and one small hitchiker crab that i knew about, as well as 2 big bristleworms (9"+), as well as the usual brittle stars ,feather dusters etc, also hav lots of mushrooms, but all small, water fine, haven't tested it for a few days but all corals doing fine so i don't think its that, other clown looks fine ,was no sign of disease, both were feeding well on flake.

The only thing i can think of is that the big crab ate the clown. can anyone tell me if this is possibl/happened before? and if so, whats the best way to catch it?

cheers

depends on the crab, but usually bigger crabs will eat ANYTHING that crosses their path, especially if its small like a juv. clown. But, then again it may have gotten trapped under some rockwork, did you try seaching for it? I would get that crab out of there!

Brittle stars are nasty little cratures i'd bet they ate him listen yo my epercinces with them 1 star fish ate 4 fish larger then your clown and also ate 2 seahorses! Do you feed them on a regular base cuz if u dont they could be the culprit

here a re many different types of brittle stars, of which only one i can think of is a recognised danger to fish...

I had a crab similar to the one you described and it (99.9% sure) kille a couple of fish and shrimp, definitely catch it asap and get an ID

hiya, caught the crab, it was about 2 inches across he carapiece. Just took it back to my LFS, but none of us could work out what it is, it wasn't in Michael's incertebrate guide, nor in any other of their publications. It looks like a convential crab, just very rough shell, and filaments on its legs, while the rear pair of legs appear to be adapted for swimming.

It deffo wasn't the starfish, they're just the standard tiny things u get on live rock, largest one is no more than 1inch across the legs. If its not the crab, then the odds are its my jumbo bristleworm, its at least a foot long and may well have been chasing my clown yesterday, it was certainly far more animated than i'v ever seen it, it was climbing up the sid of the tank and over the rocks and everything.

Just to be safe, i think i'm going to remove it, i'v got enough smaller bristleworms to deal with detritus, so does anyone know any good ways to catch bristleworms?

i think i'll look round the forums and see if anyone else has heard of a bristleworm eating a clownfish

cheers for the help guys :)

Big bristleworms can be a bother because they are difficult to keep satiated. If it were me I would either target feed it or sump it. It can't hurt your fish, unless the fish rubs up against it.
