Mini Elite Filter Not Working

sorry if this is a dumb question, but i am really frustrated right now...

i just got a filter for my tank (the hagen elite mini filter http/www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/14694/product.web). i put it together like in the booklet it came with, but when i plug it in nothing happens. i have tried different outlets so i'm sure it's not a power issue... but the water in the tank is completely still and does not look like the filter is even doing anything, it makes a really quiet humming noise, but there is no current or anything! what am i doing wrong?

suggestions? anythinggggg!!

I have one of these filters in my betta's tank. It's very prone to getting air stuck in the impeller well. The only way to get it to work again after a water change is to turn it upside down in the water and give it a little shake to dislodge the air. This usually does the trick, though sometimes I have to take off the bottom part (the bit that holds the sponge) to get rid of all the air.
If this doesn't work, I don't know what else to suggest.

^^ Sounds like you got a good suggestion there trapped air is a common problem for filters, specially external ones, if its humming then it seems to be working just need to get the flow rate up once you've tried the above then maybe double check theres nothing bloking the filter in anyway.

It's not like it's a tricky filter, take the media bit off, give it a shake, prod the impellor a bit to get it spinning etc.
