OMG! This is not my fish day! First I find one fish with a funny hairy spot and now my 4 year old has poured a glass of milk in the water!!!!!!!! He said "Fish need milk too Mommy." As sweet as his intentions were.......AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Are my fish going to die? I got my biggest bowl out and put my usual water treatments in it and filled it with new water from the faucet. I've gotten them all out and they are swimming in the bowl.

Will the milk kill them?

Geez, what's next? One of my males will probably give birth to fry! LOL

worst nightmare!

i agree with water change !

if you have another tank use some water out there!

not sure what it will do to fish if it will kill them or not?

i feed my fry powdered milk because of the calcium, but don't know about liquid, carbon in your filter should/ , might take it out but not sure, do a 50% water change to day, then a 25% water change daily, this way you are keping some of your water.

Depending on where it came from and what additives could be involved, milk in your tank should be no more harmful than a big overfeeding.

It shouldnt poison the fish or damage your filter :good: as has been said, simply do a nice big water change to dilute it out and you will hopefully be all right :D

Kids eh!

could of been worse, ive had half a pint of Vodka n Coke in mine before :)

I really sympathize with you! I have a 4 year old, too and I'm a stay at home mom with her and my 1 year old son. It's hard work!

Anyways, if you can entertain the little one(s) with something else, I'd do a large water change but not 100%. I would agree that milk should not be toxic and it would be best to not put the fish into shock. If you normally do a lot of water changes (IE at least 30% once a week) then you can probably do 60-70% now and another tomorrow. But if you don't normally change the water much its going to be more of a shock for the fish to get a large change so you should stick with several 30-40% changes over the next few days. If its been forever since you've changed the water you'll have to be even more careful and probably do 15 or 20% every day for the next week or more.

Don't keep the fish in that bowl for long, especially not if its cold in your house. The temp change will increase their likelihood of getting sick probably much more than the milk would.

HTH. Take good care of those kids.

Thanks everyone. I did a 50% Water change and it's cleared up a lot. I took some of the water out of my five gallon and added it to the bowl my fish were in. I put them back in the tank and they seem to be doing fine. I'll do another water change tomorrow.

Tammy - Those are the exact ages of my boys too. LOL 4 adn 1. I'm also a stay at home mom. Theyr'e a handful aren't they! LOL

Thanks for your help everyone.
