Two of my red zebras have these dark black spots on their bodies. They have been there about a week (when I moved them from the 55 gal into the 90 gal). The only thing I could think is that the 55 tanks had black gravel and the fish scraped on the black gravel and got a piece stuck in them???

Most of the time with mbuna the black of darkened areas on their bodies is due to fighting between males. More often than not it is seen around the mouth part. Mbuna species have a tendency to lock lips and "wrestle". But these dark marks are also seen above or around the dorsal fin area. IMHO I wouldn't been concerned as the male fish in your tank are just organising themselves in a dominance structure.

If on the other hand the fish is covered in black marked and looks in terrible condition I would remove him from the tank as he is receiving too much attention from an overzealous male and if left in the tank will most likely be harassed to death. IMHO.
