Mickey Mouse Platies

I have three mickey mouse platies that I just bought. 2 boys and 1 girl. I know that isn't right because boys will chase her too much. I want to breed my platies but how can I if I'm not allowed to get anymore platies? My mom doesn't want more fish but I want to breed them without my mom knowing. What should I do?

Hi, maybe put a divider in to separate the female. > Then allow one male in to that section for a bit, then put back in other area.

If you read the 'Livebearers' section of this forum you'll get more info. on how long it takes, etc....

Um... I don't know how long you're expecting to be able to keep this a secret for, but you're going to have a tank FULL of babies pretty soon, are you sure she won't notice?!?!

There is lots of info in the livebearers section on platies, but you definitely need to think about swapping a male for another female and also what you're going to do with the new fry that are going to be appearing in your tank every few weeks.

I know the feeling Parents hey! Why doesn't your mum want any more fish in the tank? does she think it's over stocked or is she just being plane boring?

I'd say be brave! Go and buy a couple more females or swap a male because as forthtimelucky says you'll have loads of fry in no time and your platties will soon spoil your secret anyway!

I'd also think about purchasing a separating net for when those fry appear - however I'm not sure how you'd explain that to your mum!

Good luck with the platties - keep us posted on what happens - I hope you're mum agrees in the end to you breeding your platties as there's nothing like bringing up your own fish
