Set up my new 96 litre tank yesteday and i'm starting my fishless cycle ( i know its frowned upon otherwise), I bought an ammonia testng kit today but when I got in I realised it measures in mg/l. Firstly am i right in assuming i want to try and raise the ammonia level to about 5 ppm ? Secondly is there an easy way of converting from mg/l to ppm ? If not what am i looking to raise it to in mg/l ?

Thanks in advance

charlton

PS I did buy another testing kit to check all the other levels aswell !!

Sorry to waste peoples time just looked it up again and it seems to be exactly the same ! Am i looking to get a level of about 5 mg/l then ?

mg/L is the same as ppm, so there is no need to convert.

1 mg = 0.001g
1 L = 1000ml

Therfore 0.001 / 1000 = 1/1,000,000 = one part per million.

Hi Charlton,

You are correct that mg/l is the same as ppm, just as Matty has pointed out.

5ppm (5mg/l) is a good level to use for a fishless cycle. To work out how much ammonia you need to add to achieve 5ppm in your tank, theres a calculator here.

Cheers and good luck with your cycle.

Good to see you chose fishless! :good:

Just looked at the lik you sent and according to that its should be 9.5 % of ammonia in solution, does this mean 9.5% of the tank capacity ? If so 9.5 % of 96 litres ?

No.. let me explain the different columns:

Unit - the unit in which you are going to express the volume of your tank

Volume - the amount of water in your tank according to the units selected in 1st column

Desired Level - how many ppm of ammonia you would like the tank to get to.

% of ammonia in solution - This refers to your source of ammonia. I bought mine from homebase which was 9.5% ammonia and the rest was probably water. So have a look at your source of ammonia and see what % ammonia is in the solution.. Trust me it will not be 100%

Solution required ml - This is the result that you need to look at. This figure will tell you how much of your solution you need to add..

So.. getting the % of ammonia in the solution correct is really important.

Hope that helps..

How much did you put in..? i take it you didn't put in 9 litres (i doubt you had that much ) ;)

Must of been about 100ml at a guess ( just working out how much is still left in the bottle !) It was enough to make the water go very cloudy, but its starting to clear a bit now, so what next ? Do i start again ? cheers for you help by the way, sorry if i did something wrong with the qoute up !!

Well if your solution is anything like mine and a 96 litre tank, you now have about 100ppm of ammonia. Some people have found that having over 8ppm stops the cycle working, so I think you may have a little difficulty. Putting that aside, it will take ages to come down ;) .

So.. sorry, but if my calculations are correct or even a fair bit out, it would seem like starting again would be the best thing.

Good Luck.. and i was only joking about the quote thing - i'm just a bit of a (rubbish) joker ;)

Whoops, better to make mistakes now i suppose than to kill any fish !!! The tank is constantly looking clearer though, is that not an indication of anything ? Maybe it was a bit of an exaduration that it was as much as 100ml but i think i will have to empty some of the water out and top up with new water, how much would you advise to empty out ? Plus just for future referance how long could i leave that amount of ammonia in there without doing any lasting damage, by that i mean killing of any good bacteria that might already be in there !! Sorry for all the questions ! :)
