Thay are the same ;) . Not a daft question.. well i hope not, because the only reason i know is that i asked the same question :p

I believe they are similar enough under normal conditions to be considered equivalent, but google will tell you the difference (there is one).

It does also depend on the concentration of the solution (i.e if you have 33% ammonia it will not be the same).

Have a read of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parts_per_million

The two can be exactly the same, but only for pure water at 4 deg C, because 1ml of water then weighs 1g. But I don't think the differences are big enough to worry about for dosing ammonia - not the way I measure things anyway

ppm is a dimensionless measure. That is, it is volume/volume or mass over mass or anything over that same thing. mg/L is obviously a mass/volume, fundamentally the two are different. However, for dilute concentrations of liquid water (or really dilute like Maj said) a ppm is a mg/L to the accuracy of anything we can commonly find in the house or the test equipement aquarists buy. If you are doing really detailed laboratory testing it would be inaccurate, but for fishkeeping, it is more than fine.
