i want to know if i am able to keep a couple Melanochromis johanni Maingano and some Melanochromis auratus in the same tank? like 5 maingano, 2 auratus, 2 yellow lab, 1 white lab ?

Lot's of reason not to do it.

Aurutus are very agresive,
Auarutus and maingaino are too similar
labs may not take the aurautus
white and yellow will crossbreed
and in the 40 gallon you still missing tenish fish

Maybe he's implying that you can fit 10 more fish in the tank? What are the tanks dimensions?

EIther way, certainly only keep one or the other.

thats what i thought, it is a 40BR tank, i thought i could only have 10-12 fish ?
i am planning on yellow labs and johanni maingano's
i am looking for something mainly red to go in with them, not a peacock though.. any thought?

So you're looking for a red mbuna? :p There aren't realy any but you could try iodotropheus sprengerae which are a lovely rusty orange-red color.

I'd say you're at a good number at 12 - although the 40 breeder is long enough to technically hold more fish, the lack of water volume due to the short height will make it harder to maintain if you go this route.
