Melafix?

I have a betta with some minor fin rot and ended up buying Melafix. I've been wondering though, do I have to remove my carbon filtration system in order for the treatment to work? If I remove the carbon, won't my aquarium have high levels of ammonia after? The instructions do say to remove carbon * if possible. What should I do?

How long has the carbon been in your filter for? Is it the carbon sponges or carbon media bags?

My filter has both carbon media and a piece of sponge that is not for filtering, just to hold bacteria.

Sounds like you have a carbon sponge, if it's been in your filter for a while then it's no longer active and you can add the melafix without removing the carbon.
