Having a hell of a time trying to treat my salmontail cat and pictus for whitespot. Using a multicure (malachite green, methylene blue, and acriflavine) its been doing squat for the fish other than stressing them out big time (he suggested the reason for the stress is because because the meds strip their slime coat. true?) He siad all he does (and recommends) is to give the tank a good dose of melafix, which lets the fish really relax and fight the white spot naturally. Would this work?

edit in - all fish not just the sick ones have clamped fins, had the water tested as well all ok except for slightly high nitrAte (about 20ppm)

I found that melafix does nothing for whitespot. I usually just use the normal whitespot treatments and do regular 10% wc's. I add melafix also just in case there's anything more ominous in the tank (it also makes the tank smell nice)

Having said that, with my experience with whitespot i'm not really the best to give advice! I've had loads of fatalities to whitespot this year! It wiped out my two 12g tanks :(

Last (and first time I had white spot) I had 1 fatality, not the affected fish which was a swordie but a pictus because I misread the label and didnt 1/2 the dose to account for scaless fishies in the tank

hi there, i dont think melafix will help whitespot. its generally good for fungus & minor finrot problems. ive used waterlifes protozin with excellent results on whitespot & ive heard interpets whitespot med is good too. im a little limited on what we can use as we have shrimps in our tank but protozin doesnt hurt shrimps & definitelly cured the whitespot v quickly. also here in the uk we cant buy antibiotic meds over the counter like our us collegues & im sure its the same in oz ( ive spent the better part of 20yrs in perth but am now in sunny london uk). :D

Raise the temp to 88 degrees over a few days and hold for a week. Slowly drop it back down over a second week. Add Melafix when the ich is gone.
