I have been treating my injured gold twinbar platy in a quarantine tank with melafix for several days, and her condition has only worsened. It started out as an infected bruise on her head, and has now progressed to multiple bloody wounds/growths all over her body. it's terrible. What's going on? :(

well every fish is different and every deases and illness is different.
all treatments work but not on everything or in every case. some might need something different.

it's like having the wrong tools for the job.

u bught wanna consider a new treatment.

I don't think it's worth buying another treatment that might not work on one small fish that is like half dead already anyway. (It's not looking good at all, I think it's too far gone).

Well its always handy to have the stuff in... as most fish seem to aquire a problem on a saturday night when nothings open till monday :/
Melafix is only any good for healing...its no good for treating.. Its best used with a treatment and by the sounds of it thats more like a bacterial infection.
So I would use... aquarium salt... to speed up healing and reduce stress
Melafix ....also to help with the healing of the fish
And a good Anti Bacterial medication... To fight the infection at the root of the problem.
That way your covered always and it gives the fish the best chance. :)

Give Myxazin (Waterlife) a try. It's stronger than Melafix.
Like Littleme said i's always hand to have ;)

It sounds like septicemia. It's a pretty devastating disease, and there is no way that Melafix is strong enough to treat it. I'd suggest you research it to find out of that is indeed what you fish has, because I think it is contagious and could wipe out your whole tank. So anyways, I don't think it's the meds not working, it's that they're the wrong kind and the wrong strength. Good luck.

Agreed with Melafix - it's great to prevent bacteria from getting into nipped fins or wounds like when my plakat jumped the divider and tore up my CT. But Melafix will not bring back fish from advanced stages of bacterial/fungal diseases.
Also with Melafix try diluting it with some water before adding. I had a betta who broke out with little brown patches when I dumped Melafix straight into the tank.

I've had good luck with those fizzy tab medicines for treating most bacteria/fungus cases. Tried one of those capsule things and i think it made the fish sicker.

Those Mardel (sp?) products are pretty good, too, from my experience.

melafix is purely for healing wounds and torn fins...and its great for that...nothing else...its not a treatment for and disease..

also...all melafix is is 1 part tea tree oil and 99 parts distilled water...

so dont waste your money...make your own.. :D

First of all, my fish is quarantined so there's no risk of infection, and second of all, I started treating with melafix before the advanced stages... it advanced after I started treatment. I don't think melafix was the cause, but...

Have to keep in mind, Melafix is like using a topical antiseptic on yourself. It does not treat internal problems. Its good stuff for the right things. ie. scrapes, nipped fins, etc. for "preventing" infections.
