Wow, I haven't been on these forums in ages!!! Probably a ton of new faces.

Anyway, in my 55 gallon tank I have had an outbreak of what I believe to be some form of a fungus. I have the tank stocked with red swordtails, bloodfin teras and peppered corydoras. A few of the bloodfins had/have white, almost cottony growths around their mouths and one of the swordtails appeared to have a little fungus on her tail. One of the bloodfins appears, also, to have pop-eye in one of it's eyes. The corys are showing no symptoms. I started doing a dual dose with Melafix and Pimafix last week(wednesday, I believe) both on a full dose, the next morning all of the fish were gasping at the surface. I didn't have time to do anything right away since I had to go to work but when I got home I did a 50% water change and the appeared to do better. After the change I did a half dose of both Mela and Pima and a little later still gasping but they stopped doing it on their own a short time after.

I have since started doing a quarter dose of both Melafix and Pimafix and there is still some gasping at the surface. My question is, is the gasping normal?

Havent had that issue myself with melafix and pimafix, however, sometimes meds can reduced oxygen levels in the water, which would cause the gasping. Increase aeration in the tank, either by adding airstones or via the outlet of the filter flow to break the surface of the water more.

Also Pimafix Ive been told can bite you if you overdose as it can wipe out some of your beneficial bacteria, so half dose is probably the best way to go.

Melafix is no good on columnaris it only good on cuts and wounds.
In the united states for columnaris maracyn one and two.
You must increase aeration with meds as its reduce 02 in the water.
