ok today doing my water changes i noticed around 20 fry swimming around one of my females meeli's shells, needless to say im overjoyed :D

but a quick question as this is the first time they have bred, they were only fry themselves when i got them and i have currently had them just under a year

has anyone bred them before and do i need to worry about the fry being eat when they grow on a bit?? there is next to no information on Meeli online so i figured someone on here would know :good:

spot on thats got all the info i need cheers emmsy :good:

I had a pair of Hecqui (which many believe are Meeli) that regularly bred in my 180l tang community.

I found that they would start chasing them away/attacking them after about 6-8 weeks. This was because they started a new batch every month or so and I presume were protecting the young.

Have you got any other fish in the tank they are in?

hecqui and meeli have actually been described as different species meeli grow signifficantly bigger than hecqui

there in a species tank all to them selves just the 5 of them in there :good:

Yes that is the common description. But many experienced tang keepers/breeders dispute this and regard them as the same species. Personally I am undecided, in terms of size I have seen full grown male hecqui easily as large as meeli.

Anyway, very similar in any case so you will probably get a similar breeding pattern. How do they treat the other 3 in the tank at the moment? Are you thinking of starting another tank for the young?

experienced tang keep may dispute it but scientists do not and they haver the option of opening fish up to see

im a bit unsure as to how to treat the fry, as it happens the other 3 live on the opposite side of the tank and only the parents are near the fry at the moment.

im not sure if i want to be over run with meeli but at the same time i dont want the fry to die. further to that i dont really want to sell them to a fish shop who will inturn sell them to some idiot to put in his community tank.

in short i dont know

Mojo,
would you mind sharing with us those articles that say their a different species, I'd be curious to read them.
thank you
