My fish have ich, and their meds are not doing anything. Everyone keeps getting more spots.

I've been using super ich-cure by the makers of stress coat, and it seems to be doing NOTHING. It just makes my water blue for a few hours. All of my fish are suffering from ich, and they had chilodonella(treated with melafix, it was gone in two days, still treating as recommended for a week). I had 5 fish die this morning(both rainbow sharks, a platie, and both danios, the day earlier two goldish and two bleeding hearts died and the day before that a goldfish and a bleeding heart).

Please help!

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: Too low to be a danger, about 3
PH: 6.4
Temp: 80F
Tank size: 29 gallon
Meds: Super ich cure, melafix
Filters: 1 over the side, one internal and one UGF(no carbon)
-Media: Zeonite, sponge, ceramic for bacteria
Notes:
-My tank is NOT cycled. I am using zeonite to keep ammonia down while I wait for my 100 gallon
-fish were fine the day before they died
-I used water conditioner

Have you raised temp to 30.
Increase aeration as the high temp and med reduce 02 in the tank.
Want to look at your stocking list with having goldifsh in the tank.

If the tank isn't cycled fish will die.
Also parasites can cause bacterial infections on top.

Get some seachem prime, debatable but it'll probably prove effective at lowering any toxicity in the tank, do at least a 20% water change also.
Why have you got goldfish in the same tank as tropicals?
Are you overstocked, what size tank have you got? If you are then it'll make the cycle much rougher on the fish....
Sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen (or possibly already in progress)...
Does it say you can use melafix in conjunction with other meds?

are you sure the zeonite isn't removing meds from the water along with the ammonia?

using so many products at once is asking for trouble IMHO, so many things can interact, if meds aren't working my thought is that the combination of medications is giving some reaction and stopping it from working.

if at all possible get some mature media from someone, check out this thread and see if you can locate someone in your area. If you can't do that get hold of some bio spira which should at least speed up the cycling process if not cycle the tank instantly. i've said it before but you need to get this tank cycled asap, holding it off with zeonite is an accident waiting to happen imo.

once you've got the tank cycled concentrate on treating ich, raise the temp up, increase aeration and get a good strong ich med with malachite green/blue as the active ingredient.

I did most of that already, I wasn't aware goldfish were not compatible whenn I bought them, old LFS said they would be fine. I have no ammonia, or nitrite, so it's not the lack of cycling doing it.

I'll try and pick that up.
Look above.
40 gallon.
Man at new LFS (actually knows stuff about fish) said they could be.

I wouldn't be able to know, it doesn't say it on the box of zeonite or medicine, it only says to remove carbon.
New LFS said it would be fine together, and I'm only using two meds.
Only person near me hasn't logged in for a month. (Inchworm)
I put in zeonite as a temporary fix until ich was gone.
Went out and bought stuff with malachite green, waiting for current dose to be over, then changing water and carboning for a day.

If the blue shade dissapears quickly it means your meds are being absorbed by something.

My sponges are blue, would they absorb it?

Hi,

I know you think different but you really need to get some fish out that tank, it's not 40gallon, more like 16. Please get your tape measure out and take actual measurements. As I said in another post mine is 38 gallon and is twice the size. You are badly overstocked and your fish will continue to get sick unless you make some room for them.

I just did some measurements and looked at the tank size list. It's a 29.

Guess LFS guy was wrong. Strange, he seemed so sure about it.

Hiya,

It wouldn't be the first time an LFS guy was wrong! Scarily I was in LFS today and overheard a couple wanting to buy a tank tomorrow but take fish away today and keep them in a bowl overnight. The LFS guy told them no, they would have to take the fish at the same time as the tank so they didn't get stressed by 2 moves!!! Nothing about the stress the fish will be under when they're plopped into an uncycled tank. My sister has also just bought 2 angel fish for a 1 foot tank. The LFS guy said they'll only grow to the size of the tank. Mmmm.

Anyway, I know you're getting a bigger tank but if you think it's going to be a whileI would stongly advise rehoming one of your plecs., that would substantially cut down the strain on the system.

xxx

I had a local fish guy try to tell me that I should clean the tank because of fish making it dirty, with ummm thur slime coats and stuff. lmao LFS people often don't know diddly. And more than just carbon can absorb your meds. The sponges may be absorbing it as well. And again, as soon as the color is gone, the meds are gone, so find out whats absorbing the meds and then maybe the med swill show a marked improvement in your fish.

In another thread it mentions my LFS who recommend angels and black sharks as good 5 gal starter fish.
Tell you an upside down catfish is also the correct size for a 5.
Or how about apple snails that generously clean plecos....
NEVER trust your LFS unless you have evidence based on fact to back your faith up. They are after all predominantly (at least in the majority of cases) salesman.
I've battered my LFS with part time job applications but they would never even consider it, their sales would drop WAY down.

I know about how most LFS are unknowledgeable, this guy isn't one of them. He explained cycling to me, said how the other guy was an idiot, and gave me the stuff I needed at a big discount. He just made a little mistake in the size of the tank.

I'm going to remove the sponges, hope that works...
