Hi all its me again :* Now that I found a good product and came highly recommended like Prime I am now looking for medication to treat the common diseases eg Rust or velvet. Is there a product that is far better and more effective to use that someone can highly recommend? Also I would like one for bacteria as well. There is a lot of products out there but I would like the ones that has been successful in treating these ruddy ailments. I've tried some products that pet stores recommend but I found them a waste of money and not worth the plastic the stuff comes in. I want something serious and very effective. Any info will be greatly appreciated. :good:

where are you located? different meds in different countries.
the very first "med" every betta owner should have is epsom salt for bloating issues like constipation, dropsy and popeye. can find them in the pharmacy very cheaply. aquarium salt is also useful for fungus and mild bacterial and slimecoat issues. if in US, chain pet stores carry antibiotic meds Maracyn I and II (both good to have on hand for emergencies). If in US stronger antibiotic such as sulpha or erythromycin or tetracycline might be found at better small fish shops (for "tough" bacterial infections, but chances are you wont need anything so strong).
hope that is helpful.

Hi :) Thanks for your helpful info. I live in Australia and I've looked in most pet and aquarium stores and they just carry the usual Wardley products except for one store where I found Prime which was a bonus. It's just that I've got an outbreak of velvet at the moment and I wanted something to knock it on the head fast. I'm using meth blue but it seems to take ages to get rid of and I'm sick of the tank and me getting stained. As for bacteria infections, I've lost a couple of fish just in the last couple of weeks no idea what it may have been. Did the water changes,,salt and meth with no affect. If I had an antibiotic I may have been able to save them.

Best treatment for velvet...big waaterchange and total tank blackout for a week. Life cycle of the parasite needs light to survive. Meth blue really is more fungal treatment. Copper sulfate would be a better option barring any inverts in the tank. Black out is best way to go. But no peeking! Seriously,
cheers.

Now thats new to me.......thanks I'm right onto it. What brand or how is copper sulphate sold? I've been giving him water changes every 2nd day so far. Oh and I've just noticed a small wart like or barnacle like thing on the bottom of his chin. Don't tell me he has other problems.

For future referance I have found Science Products Broad Spectrum quite good. The one I get doesn't have to be used at half dose for fry, tetra and loaches like most medications, and I have used it on tetras will no ill effects to them. You could also use Melafix and Pimafix, Pimafix is another 1 that doesn't state to use at half dosage rates, and I think Melafix is the same. Most of my local pet shops carry Science Products, I guess it helps that is an Australian company and made in QLD.

Thanks for that info. I've been doing the rounds to all the pet and aquarium stores and have come across that brand at Pet Stock.(I think it was them) I've looked at so many I can't remember who sold what now. The Science one you have, dose it treat rust/ velvet or is it for bacteria or do they have products for all ailments?

Copper sulfate is usually liquid. did you start a blackout yet? that is the simplest/best way to treat velvet.
cheers

The Science Product Broad Spectrum can be used to treat bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases. Science Products does have quite a few other products that also treat many fish ailments, but I have generally avoided them because of the toxicity to fry, tetras and loaches. Try looking up Science Products online and you should see their whole range.
Good luck.

No worries, I know it can be hard finding a product that you can actually get and that you trust.

Yes did that and managed to obtain copper sulphate from one of my regular aquarium shop. This lady gave me 10mls to use (no charge, nice lady). I went home and administered the dosage and within 2 days it was gone. My next questions are ...can I now do a complete water change because I don't like the idea of him swimming in it as it is toxic. Do I still keep him in the dark until the week is up and does the copper sulphate distroy the good bacteria in the filter system? Sorry to bombard you like this......I also managed to find another Seachem product called Cupramine. Its less toxic than copper sulphates...have you heard of it? :)

never heard of Cupramine but based on the name it is a copper containing med. Probably works like copper sulfate. if using copper sulfate AND doing blackout, probably only need to blackout for 4 days instead of the week. just do a big waterchange when its over and test your stats 12 hours and 24 hours after to see how the filter is handling itself.
hopefully the velvet is gone!
all the best
cheers

Thanks for that. I just shone the torch on him tonight and noticed just a couple of little spots but the rest of himm is looking good. He started making his usual bubble nest again which is a good sign. I'll keep him in the dark for another couple of days then give him a rinse out. You have been a great help....I've never encounted this before but thats just the start of things. I seem to be getting one thing after another lately. Once again many thanks. :)
