Okay so ive purchased a Eheim 2028 filter with no media.

ATM im currently running a rena filter with 2 course sponges and 2 finer sponge and bio media thats like little tubes.

Ive ordered a proper Eheim course (blue) sponge for the filter and some wee kinda bio ball shaped thingies (sorry for the excellent description)
From what ive read and seen about these filters they use a carbon sponge in one of the trays do i really need to use these?
As it says they should be changed 2 monthly.
With my Rena the only thing i change is the polishing wool as the sponges still have there spring ad doing an effective job.

So could i just fire all the media i currently have in my filter (which i need to do anyway to seed it) and just keep it in there?

Hope it makes sense lol

I can tell you that carbon only needs to be used when helping clear out medications and such, so don't bother with carbon.

Also, most of the time, when using sponges, they don't need to be replaced as often as the filter manufacturer recommends. As long as it is intact, you should just rinse it off in tank water and out it back.

Carbon is for removing meds and tannins so doesn't need to be in the filter all the time. Any type of media can be used in any filter, manufacturer specific stuff is just cut to size, etc. so saves hassle.

Put all the mature media you have in and fill the gaps with new stuff and replace media when worn out, not on a routine basis.
