Right I have just set up my 227l tank heater and filter have been attached and temp is up on the water to 25*c

now I have my 70l tank with my guppies and endlers in it should I remove the media from my filter in this tank and add it to the new one ? or would I be better off doing a fishless cycle (which wasnt done on the 70l) and would I have to take fish out of the current tank for this to work

also do the external filters add oxygen to the tank or do they need to have air bubbles in the tank ie air pump feature ?

You can just stick the fish from the 70 into the new one and bung all your media in the new filter :) ull loose some bacteria but nothing a little close eye wont cure :)

was trying to keep seperate tanks

so would be best to start over

Ahh in this case yeh :) you can speed up the fishless cycle of the 2nd tank by adding part of the mature media or squeezing some of the 'gunk' from it into the new one :)

will do that cheers

should i add the ammonia befor i add some bacteria or not ?

what i will do is go out and get the ammonia befor i mess with the old filter

cheers for the help

do i need pure ammonia or os house hold ammonia ok rated 9.5%

is their anything in these solutions that could be harmfull

i have enzo household ammonia

cheers

Pure ammonia. Some have added detergents, this is a No no.

Shake it... does it froth?

Andy

no it dont froth just stinks lol and when i opened it with out thinking got into a open paper cut and stung to hi heaven lol

all i can smell is ammonia like the hair dye's no other scent is detectable by my nose wounder what it tastes like

Sounds fine. The main thing with ammonia is that it doesn't froth up and that is isn't pine or lemon scented or anything like that. In the UK the easiest places to get ammonia from are Homebase and large Boots stores.

:good:

cheers think i may have over done it a bit put 10ml in after reading a post and putting 3ml in and getting a reading of 1.5mg/l i have a 227l tank and a 305 external but my test only goes upto 4mg/l

any one know the ratio of mg/l to ppm ?
