Help! I got two zebra danios (long-fin, yellow - not glow yellow, just regular yellow or maybe gold?) and they are picking on and killing my fish! they killed one of my glofish last night. My 3year old was devastated - it was a pink one and she loves pink.

I separated the meanest one but I'm sure he won't last long b/c it's an unheated tank... i don't have a separator and i had to get him out or all my fish will die - he just will NOT stop torturing them.

The second one is not as mean but is not nice either and I'm afraid he will kill too... if i take him out he will probably die but if leave him in he will probably kill other fish. UGH!!! I can get a separator tomorrow but that will probably be too late :(

If you have no other alternative - take a ziploc bag and poke it with holes that will allow water to mix but not the fish. then fill it with water and the mean danios (one per ziploc) and float in the main tank. this should be only a TEMPORARY solution. Hopw it works out for you.

How many danios are there in the tank(glolights + regular danios)?

Ok, that ziplock trick is a good idea, I will do that. I'm getting a heater for the spare tank tomorrow.

As for danios, I have 1 black/white zebra that looks like he is going to die any minute - his tail is gone and he's swimming into the glass :(, a yellow glofish, an orange glofish, .... oh well that's it. I had one other black/white zebra but it was dead this morning, i'm assuming from the yellow danio.

holy crap as I was typing this he killed one of my platy's. guess he's mean after all :(. guess i'll get that baggie now

Danios generally like to be kept in groups of at least 7 or so; the more the merrier. However seeing as the personality of your fish, i doubt its going to work out. If things doesnt work out, the best thing to do might be to take it back to the store. Good Luck!

Of course, I'll just take them back! LOL, I didn't even think of that. I have the receipt here - i just got them a few days ago.

So how do you avoid this? or do you? I thought danios were so passive :(. these fish are awful!!!

Danio's are fine usually as long as they have a group of at least 4-5. This keeps them within their own group and then they will only pick on each other.

As for goldfish, they don't need a heater b/c they are a coldwater species. Be sure to not keep them in tropical communities or temperatures as this could make them unhappy and allso not allow them to live as long.

Sorry to hear about the danios and problems.

Also mature danios, will show a yellowish tinge to them. Mine have it and it's completely normal.

I don't have any goldfish ;). I meant that these danios are a gold color... they are more yellow though. Definitely not a tinge though, they are completely yellow from head to fin... the glofish are also danios (ie., not goldfish ;))

When all this started I had 7 danios, but they were all different colors. maybe that's why the yellow ones went on their killing sprees. bummer. Now I have 2, not counting the psychotic homicidal yellow guys.
