Hi, Am looking into getting either some amano shrimp or some maylasian trumpet snails for my planted tank, is there any pros and cons for either of these, out of the two which would you recommend? Or maybe some of each are they ok in the same tank?

Many Thanks Gordon

what is it that you want to achieve?

MTS are carniverous... they wont eat algae ;)
Amanos will eat the fishes food rather than algae whenever they get the chance.

i have read that both will eat algae, im take it that the information is wrong then, have read it on the net somwhere a little while back, cant remember where though

Cheers Gordon

Not true.!!!!!!!

MTS DO eat alage, they may also eat fish food.
Amano shrimps, DO also eat algae, they do refuse some types of algae but will eat most. They will also eat fish food.

If your water is good enough for shrimp,Ie, low in heavy metals etc. I would go for some cherry shrimp and cardinia (mettitarter "spelling"? )
Along side them I see no harm with addnig MTS as well.

Heres a some links for where you may get snails and shrimp.

Thanx Greame, that was the impression i was under that both would eat algae, thanx for the links too, i knew that aquaessentials had them i will take a look at the snail shop.

Cheers Gordon

I have both in my tank, they seem to work quite well together. The shrimps eat the algae and the snails seem to eat everything else left over.

Both are a great addition to a tank. Aslong as you have sand for MTS I'd go for it!

Having both of them in our tanks gives me time to watch them and observe their behaviour....
the MTS dont seem to make any noticable differance to algae, they eat the foods we put in for the fish and other snails... we have no 'pest snails' in our tanks and I have seen them eating snail eggs.
We have dead plant matter and algae in our tanks along with hundreds of MTS... I've read about them being meat eaters and about them eating plant matter - our plants have never been touched - I'll draw my own conclusions.

I didnt say that Amamo shrimp wont eat algae, just that they are opertunists and would rather run off with a shrimp pellet than spend time trying to pick algae off the plants etc.
