I am v worried as my oranda has little white spots on him, they look a bit like ich, but they are only on the very leading edge of his arm fins, and maybe just one on the gills but I am not sure.
He seems healthy, my tank has been cycled for ages and I have not had any non zero readings for ammonia or nitrites for a very long time.
A perusal of the internet brought up that white spots may appear here on male goldfish of breeding age http://members.aol.com/jjduedall/malefish.htm

How do I tell which it is? Am paranoid as have had fish die of ick previously, but do not want to risk decycling my tank with unneccessary medicine, and it couldnt be good for him.

So far I have done about a 25% water change and added a small amount of salt to the tank. (A hepaed tea spon in 58 litres).

I was wondering if anyone had any experience/advice with this?
Thanks.

The ick spots are normally all over the body, sounds like you have a healthy male. The breeding spots are bigger than the salt grain size of ick. I would just keep an eye, if its ick there will be new spots on other parts of the body. Sounds like the fish is fine
