If you don't want to read the whole post I have made a summary at the bottom, I know how it is, you come to help but cant be bothered reading loads! I'm exactly the same so I made a summary for people like us at the bottom!

Hey guys i haven't been around for awhile but im ready to get my hands dirty again in the planted tank! Not especially for my own interest in plants, although i am interested in the biology behind plants, but mainly for the advantage they give to water quality compared to artificial plants. My main downfalls last time i tried this were..
1) I didn't wash for snail removal effectively enough last time i planted up.
2) My lighting was laughable tbh.
3) Co2 was also inadequate
3) Ferts were none existent

So my main aim with the tank is thus; I don't especially want a tank that i have to spend ages on every week, so not really a high tech tank (money issues also contribute to this!) But I want a tank that I can stock with mainly shoaling fish in a nice looking planted aquarium.

Tank - rio 240ltr, the lights flicker alot and it hurts my eyes no end! So im guessing I need a new ermm ballast? (forgive my knowledge on this subject, I have just read the pinned topic on lighting and thats where i robbed the word ballast from :p) What other things may be contributing to the flickering? What kind of lights would be good for a low tech low maint. tank? Any links would be great, i have looked around the web and tbh I don't have a clue what im looking for.

filtration - I think will be adequate for what I wish to have in the tank it turns the tank over about 3 times an hour(It is a ehiem professional err i forget the number but its high! lol).

Ferts - Im going to look into these now but any hints would be great.

Plants/scape - ok probably the main thing I need to look at, along with rocks. I have been inspired by alot of the pictures on this and other sites I like the look of the 'fields with floating fish' im sure it has a name and im quite sure GF did something like this not long ago, with some bog wood that had moss on it making it look like a tree! Now my idea would be to have the field with maybe 3/4 'trees' maybe more i think it would create a great scape, but obviously this would need more planning before i went ahead

Substrate - Last time i did use an expensive soil, however im not sure it was the correct one for me, this time i would like recommendations for you experienced keeps as to what substrate aids floor covering sp. of plant the most.

Summary

What lights would be good for my tank rio240 - I wish to have a low maint tank consisting of mosses and something to carpet the tank floor.?

What substrate would be good to achieve this?

What plants would be good to achieve this?

Ok well thats all for now, Ill let you know what happens on my road to (hopefully) planted success!

Low light carpets are tricky, you could try moss or perhaps riccia, but the HC or glosso carpets are tricky without high light.

What substrate would be good to achieve this?

If its a low light tank (or not for that matter) any of the decent planted substrate would do. Tropica is a great base layer substrate or akadama is getting good reviews as a complete substrate that is not going to break the bank.

Hey, thanks for the replies!

After looking into the lighting, and you said i need around 120w is there anyway i can get this out of two bulbs? just i dont like the idea of diy on my jewel rio 240.

Co2- hmmmm Im not to sure again I would like it to be cheap and cheerful!, i thought with a relativly low light tank i wouldnt need asmuch, but again all suggestions welcome!

Thanks Again

Greg

You cant get more light out of two bulbs than they are rated for. I.e. if the supplied bulbs and ballast are for 30w they you can only ever get 30w of light out of them. Either replace the existing lighting or add more lighting. Simple as that.

BTW 120w puts you at 2WPG, that is NOT low light. You'll need lots of co2, ferts and plants -> i.e. a high light tank. If you want a low maintenance tank, I would aim for 80w to 100w of light. But a low light tank isn't going to give you a nice carpet unfortunely. Carpet = high light.

What kind plants would I be able to grow at 80-100w ? Im not sure what kind of fish I would like to keep... Hmm maybe i will have to save up some more cash for lighting/co2 Im unable to find any ballasts that would give me 120w without any DIY any ideas?
Thanks again for the replies

You dont have to get a 120w ballast, i dont think you can, you can get 4 x 30w ballasts or 3 x 40w ballasts
