I recently got 3 Lyretails and 2 regular Grey Mollies from my LFS. I was just wondering, will they mate with each other, and if so what would be the end result? I also have some orange molly lyretails, if they mated with the greys, what would be the end result, that is if they did mate.

I am not sure on the result, but I'm guessing the normal tail/fins are the more dominate trait. So most of the offspring will probably have normal fins.

Also to my knowledge lyertail males normally cannot successfully breed.

The mollies will cross without any attention to lyretail or not. The results are something I have never seen a reason to explore. Instead, I try to keep lyretails together and regular tails together.

Are lyretail males really infertile? That may explain why my black mollies (male lyretail, female common)never bred

An extreme lyretail male can have difficulty breeding in some livebearers due to the misshapen large gonopodium not functioning properly as a sex organ. In those cases, new lyretails are produced using lyretail females and regular males. I am sure this is the case with platies and swordtails but I have never seen a molly that badly shaped to affect its abilities. Instead, I have used lyretail male mollies with my female to produce more lyretails.

lyretail gene in mollies dose not affect their breeding as oldman has stated, it's only affected in Xiphophorus species (swords/platies).

As fro what you would get you would never know as to do the you need to know what their parents was.
