Hi there, im attempting to light my new tropical tanks up but I am trying to get a marine effect. Ive found a Marine moonlight tube for sale on ebay.

Would this do the job? and would it have any unwanted effects on my fish due to the UV spectrum????? or am I just over-thinking it?

Any advice is more than welcome

Ahh Ok then but why not just get a blue and white bulb for your FW? something like http://www.seapets.co.uk/view-products/category/1292.html where you can have one bulb white and one bulb blue for a bit of color effect?

I don't see any harm in putting it in fresh water aquaria, as marine fish are fine with it and they get the same sunlight. I don't think it looks very good, but hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you want it, go for it. It won't really do anything for plant growth though, so keep that in mind if you have a planted tank.

wouldnt the strong uv output of the marine lighting damage cells on the fish ? and plants for that matter ?

Shouldn't do anything to the fish. Saltwater and brackish fish are fine with this lighting. They get the same sunlight as freshwater fish in the wild, so they wouldn't have adapted to high amounts of UV light. I don't know about the plants. It would be interesting to find out. If you go forward with this idea, let us know what happens. Maybe just try it with one or two plants just to make sure.

Plants tend to react less favourably to the higher temperature of marine lighting (which, after all, is designed to help a symbiotic algae - zoothanthellae - grow).

The light will not affect fish, and you may even like the effect of it, but don't but surprised to find yourself battling algae fairly often.
