Hi, i am going to set up my marine tank soon, said i would before but delayed.

Well i don't get how to use the hydrometer.

The water goes in and the lever floats up. Do you take the reading when it shoots up or leave it for a minute or two until it decends and floats?

Thank you...

Darrell..you read it after if settles. Unfortunately, they are cheap plastic and small bubbles can stick on the float. If you have the money, invest in a refractometer. You can find them on Drs. Foster and Smith for about $39-49 depending on sales. Advantages?:

1) Easier to read, like looking thru a telescope
2) Easier to clean, you don't drip SW all over the floor
3) Although not perfect, more precise than a hydrometer
4) Fun to use
