Hi all, I have just set up an expensive tank and equipment for tropical fish.
I bought the set up in stages without any knowledge of "Tropical Fish" and now have several Danio's in to break the water.
Having started to stock my tank I went to the shop who gave me good advice but realised the fish I actually wanted where Marine.
I am now thinking of changing before I buy anymore fish but I know I need a skimmer and the lighting is different and its expense I can do without but to be honest my heart is with Marine.
Any advice on Marine would be helpfull.
The salt compaound I get is already done and the guy at the shop Blue Ocean would set me up.
Please try not to get to scientific but would like to hear your views.
Also I hear the tank has to be open, which is something else I have to consider as my tank
a beautifull oak top which i'm reluctant to take off.

the marine section is here! >>>> http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/forum/72-tropical-saltwater-reefs-and-marine/

I have marine tank but no corals only fish with live rock. for any marine system you need a skimmer and a sump (to remove nitrates / nutrient export). I would also invest in a good external filter depending on your tank size. There are two types of marine systems you can have a Coral Reef or FOWLR system. A FOWLR system is what I have ie Fish Only With Live Rock, as the only maintenance you need to do is water changes every week, so its the cheapest marine system as you only need salt!

However Coral reefs are a different matter as they need more attention and supplements added to the water, aswell as corals needing minimum 10 Hours of strong Light everyday in order to grow means reef tanks are more of a headache and much more expensive to run!

If you really wanna go marine start with a simple FOWLR setup and go from there as you will learn on the way, and you may decide reefs is for you as everyone is different but for me its its Fish only all the way :sly:
