All of my lfs' carry both varieties and they seem to have a common list of ailments that they work for. only real difference i have seen is Maracyn mentions body fungus and maracyn II does not. does anybody have more detail information on the differences between these two?

maracyn is used to treat gram postive infections and secondary infections. maracy II is used to treat gram negative infections wihich include secondary and internal infections. the make up of the bacteria determines whether it is gram positive or negative. basically gram postive is external and gram negative is internal.

thank you again semper, I got the right one then (maracyn, to treat body fingus). I was trying to figure out if the medicine had killed my whiptail cat. I think it was the stress of the newbie errors I made 12 weeks ago combined with the stressof medication. the 3 sword tails (with finrot, bad betta , bad fish.) that were in the quarantine tank with him are all looking much better. ;)

i am sure that you know this but have to say it for those who may not know. when treating with meds, you need to remove the carbon in the filter or it will remove the meds from the water. meaning you may as well flush them down the toilet.

also salt is good to add when treating fish for disease. aquarium salt aids fish in the proper function of their gills. when fish are sick and diseased their gill function can become handicapped. fish use thier gills to remove toxins form thier bodies. when their gills are not functioning properly, the toxins build up in their bodies and can lead to fish loss. the dosage of salt is one well rounded tablespoon per every five gallons of water. when replacing water for water changes it is only neccessary to add the proper amount for the replacement water, not the whole tank again. also scaleless fish will have to be removed as aquarium salt can burn them.

I did know that but thanks forthr eminder anyway. I don't use carbon in my tanks except for afew days after medication. I read up on les' and cm's setups and since removing carbon and my ugf the water in the main tank has finally stabilzed.

thanks for the info semper

did you smash the ugf with a hammer? i did after going crazy when i first started and could not get my tank right. more of a pain than they are worth with all of the other filter systems out there.

carbon will not remove the salt though. that can only be done with water changes. you will have to ensure that all of the salt is out of the tank before reintroducing scaleless fish in.
