I was at Petsmart today getting fish food when I came upon all the bettas in those little bitty cups that I hate!! Anyway, I was thinking about getting a betta so I stopped to examine them. I was looking at a few with very little coloring and no veil tails and I realized that on those INHUMANE little cups it said that they were males. They looked like females!!! I'm not a betta expert, but I'm pretty sure that those were females. Do you think they know that? I mean, maybe I'm wrong but who knows? Anyway, even though I was going to go to my lfs the next day, I bought one anyway. It's way cool!!! B)

They very well could have been females. Of course there are male bettas with short fins. I cant imagine that a pet store would carry them though.

hey those litte cups aren't a in humane as you think they are..you should see the way they're shipped. betas are puddle fish and in nature live in little puddles or pools of water

anyway, there is a short finned strain of betta, yes many fish stores carry them

you can't sex them based on colour..typically in a veil tailed beta, the male has long flowing fins and a female has short ones, and is usually smaller . If you plan on keeping one of each sex together be prepared to have a dead female. The male doesnt always accept her

the females are always the more expensive one here for some weird reason. It doesn't seem the same there, but is it the same somewere else for any of you reading this thread?
