how old/big are male swordtails when they start to grow their sword?

Males are roughly divided to two different kinds; early males and late males. Early ones grow their sword in the age of 3-4 months but stay smaller. The late maturers grow their sword in the age of 6-8 months and grow quite huge.

I got up this morning to find my father male sword had jumped out the little hole where all the pipes and wires go into the tank he managed to make it a good 2 meters away from the tank. what a jump! poor guy he was the father of half the fish now in the tank, so atleast he made the best of his time.
