My male german blue ram has recently become sort of pale. His blue coloring is no showing up and he seems to stay in the same place all day. All my other fish are fine including my female ram who is very colorful. What do you think is wrong with him.

He could be ill. I would recommend separating him from the other fish and keeping his water clean. Some aquarium salt could help too. Is he still eating?

Are you sure of the sex of your Rams? All information I have found says that females tend to be less colourful. Are you sure your colourful female is a girl? How do you tell? I have 4 Rams and I'm hoping one is female. I only think this as she seems to have paired off with one of the Blues who is definately a male.

I know for sure both my rams are german blue rams but they look a lot different. The one that i think is a male has big sort of sailfin in the back way bigger than male rams i saw in the pictures below, and the female is colorful but doesn't have a big sailfin. I don't have a digital camera yet so i can't take a picture. The male ram is still eating but you can't see any of his blue coloration and he sits in one spot for most of the day. The stores where i bought them supposely got me a male and female but you can't always try LFS.

German Blue Rams

The one with a LARGE fin could be a long fin ram (species variation). Females often have less colouring than males but color up at spawning time, to loose it again after, males on the other hand do tend keep theior color better but will loose it when stressed or sick.

The 2 most reliable ways to sex blue rams are a-males have a more angular/pointed dorsal fin, were females have rounded ones. b-females may have a pink patch on their belly, not very visable if they are lacking color so can be harder to pick.

Thanks, well i took a picture with my camera phone of my suspected male ram, but the quality is horrible so you probably won't be able to tell. But i'll post it anyway

Sometimes any pic is better than none and from it I'm willing to say its male, from the fact the color looks moderate->fine and not showing any pink also the length of the trailing edge on the dorsal indicates a probable male as well. Others may want to comment though.

Hmmm ....... I'd go for Male as well. I'm very hopeful that one of my Golden's is female. 'She' has a very rounded dorsal fin and has a purple glow to her belly. I will try to post pictures tonight. I think my other Golden is male, he is always very colourful for a Golden and has a very erect dorsal. Also when the two Goldens clash 'He' never seems to retaliate when 'She' goes for him, but he will go head to head full on with my Male Blue.

Like I said, I'll try and post pictures of all four to get their sexes confirmed later.
