One of my male guppies (white from face down to center then black until the end of fin) has now lost a load of scales within his black area, its like a white band where he is losing them, is this any thing too drastic that needs treating or is just him changing his colourings?

Your ammonia is too high and can cause scale loss as it burns.
Has your tank cycled? If so then you need a bigger filter with more media to cope with the waste.
If your tank is new then keep ammonia under 1 by doing water changes and wash the filter media in old tank water.
There is a disease that causes scale loss so keep a close eye on the others.

The tank was two weeks into its cycle before we added fish, my mate how has been keeping fish for ages and his dad both agreed it was ready for fish. So if ammonia was the cause i need to keep an eye on that, but whilst im here can i still get accurate tests if the tank is being treated for white spot (ich) or will i have to wait untill the end of the treatment course?
