One of my male guppies (white from face down to center then black until the end of fin) has now lost a load of scales within his black area, its like a white band where he is losing them, is this any thing too drastic that needs treating or is just him changing his colourings? When he stays still long enough i will try to get some pictures.

Water stats

Ammonmia - 1 ppm - i know it needs to be a lot lower but how?
Nitrites - 0 ppm
Ph - light greens so thats 7ish - sorry with this im using a old pad of litmus paper from school.
Temp - 25C

Its not normal that’s for sure. I haven’t any experience of this myself. I guess it’s the ammonia that’s the problem. He will probably be very prone to infection, if you get a pic you could post it in the emergencies forum, folks there may know more. Do lots of water changing, the ammonia needs to be giving a zero reading. I take it it’s a new tank or its having a mini cycle.

Hope he recovers, good luck

Its a newish tank it was left cycling for a week and half and my mate gave it the all clear but just in case i got some guppies since they were meant to be hardy fish.

Guppys are not really hardy anymore due to all the inbreeding,You really could do with getting a new test kit to get accurate results!! The papers seem to give false readings to a lot of people ive used a liquid test and had it checked by another test and they seem more accurate.I reckon its possibly the Ammonia thats caused the scale problem, although i cant defo say cos ive ever seen it before :/
