Hi

I'm writing this for my brother, who also has a tropical tank. One of his male guppies has lost its tail, it looks like fin nipping, accept we have no idea what did it as he has no fin nippers! He has moved the guppy into a net. What we want to know is does the tail grow back? the guppy is still very active and looks well apart from the missing tail!.

Thanks in advance

Becky

Yes the tial will gro back.. the best bet to do is do water chances frequently to prevent bacteria fromg etting into his tail(so this is what i was told). i had this happen to one of my guppies.. and his tail grew back within a couple weeks, with me woing water changes every other day....

My female lost her tail, I put her in my breeding / quarantine tank and with water changes and some time, it grew back.
If he/she is swimming ok it might be ok where it is, but if its struggling the other fish may nip it. Breeding tank for a little while might be best bet.
What other fish have you got that could be nipping at it ?

hi

thanks for the answers.

my brother has in his tank,

platies
swordtails
mollies
guppies.

so we cant see what was nipping it.

Nothing too obvious, but alot of fish have their own personality. All you can do is keep your eye on it now really and hope for the best. If its still swimming, can eat well and isnt still being attacked, it can be fine in a few weeks. as mcdanielnc89 suggested, keep your water within limits and do some frequent changes.

I cant think of anything you can put in the tank chemical wise to help...but im no expert on that sorry.

Good luck :good:

if there are other male gupps in the tank it was probaly them, give it time and cmean water and it will grow back :good:

as others have said, just watch out for any secondary infection, if he/you notice any white fluffy cotton woll like growth or white/red patches around the edges of the tail then yuo'll need to treat him for fungus/fin rot

for now though just keep the water clean and monitor him closely, post back if you spot any of the signs above and we'll tell you what to do

The guppy most likely has finrot, treat with a med like Pimafix or something like anti fungus and finrot" by Interpet to cure the fish- doing regular small water changes with dechlorinator will also help the healing process, although remember to top up any meds lost by the water changes.
Just to make sure though that the fish has not been fin nipped by any other fish in the tank, what types of fish do you have in the tank and how many? How many gallons is the tank and what is your average tank cleaning regime like/how do you do you go about it and how often?
