i was jus cleaning out my tropical tank, when i noticed that 1 of my male guppys is turning black. Its dorsel fin and under belly and tail have gone black. It is normally a silverish colour with an oramge and black spotted tail. It is not swimming right and just now has started to lie on the rocks on its side.

Water stats
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 25
ph 7.2
gh 6
kh3

Anybody any ideas

It now cant sim good at all. He is just getting blown about in the current

It could just be old age, or it could be an internal parasite.

I would quarantine immediately, more for the sake of the other fish than anything else, I don't think he is within the powers of any medication from what you have said.

I would take the precaution of dosing the tank with Melafix though for a week just to make sure that anything nasty left behind is killed off. Up the temperature to 28-30 degrees celcius for this period. Bear in mind though that you will need to increase oxygenation during the treatment period so you may need to use an airstone.

I have an air stone running all the time anywayjust for the look. the tank is filtered with a ehiem 2215 and the internal, which is now just really for airation as the ehiem took everything over.

Would myaxzin do the job of the melafix untill i het a bottle tomorow?

Not 100% sure if you can mix both of these meds so I would err on the side of caution and say no.

I would isolate the Guppy and do a decent water change on the tank. Although, if you have just done a change, just do another tomorrow before adding any meds.

Have you had an ammonia reading lately.
Turning black can mean quite a number of things from cancer to fish tb.

Well tried to do what i could for the little fella but what ever it was it did finally kill him. I still dosed the tank with melafix after he died to make sure it didnt spread.

Oh and wilder no i aint had ammonia readings for quite some time.

Ok that fine black patches can be ammonia burns that are healing.
Keep a close eye on other fish.
Good Luck.
R.I.P. Bless Him.
