Last night I was watching my fish tank when I noticed that my male guppy was trying to mate with my mollie, she didnt seem to be wanting anything to do with him and just kept trying to nip him when he went near her but if he manages to will that be a bad thing?

Thanks

As far as I know they can't interbreed but guppies are horny little things and will try and mate with anything and everything. I got mine two female guppies and he still preferred to try it on with my male platy.

Yes, they can interbreed, although it's not especially likely.

There's a really good thread about muppies, as molly/guppy hybrids are often called, with pictures, here: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=161596

The survival rate for muppies is really low past 1 month of age, but it's really up to you whether you'd like to let things progress however they happen to or separate the fish. :)

They're definitely pretty neat! I've only ever seen one picture of a (supposedly) mature muppy, although the thread that I linked earlier has some wonderful pics of fry. It's a shame that their genetics are so unstable. :/ Mollies and guppies just aren't closely related enough to produce consistently robust offspring together.

They're like a true urban myth of the fish world--quite a few people have heard of them, but there's so little credible documentation on them (probably largely due to the low survival rate) that most people don't believe it when they hear that such hybrids are possible.
