i looked at my male one day and saw his beautiful tail had loads of horrible splits in it why is this?

my males suffer with this if the tail is long and flowing, i always thought it was fin rot but it was just split not eaten away, is there anything hes swam past thats sharp? sometimes it just happens.

Yes this is very common, mainly when keeping a few males together usually, add melifix this will usually help or give then a larger aquarium

ok thanks. umm no theres nothing in my tank thats sharp i dont think. do i have 2 treat it? or is it harmless.

harmless unless it maybe gets infected or sumthing along those lines, hell be fine though :)

I have a couple of guppys that have had there tails chewed off.... I was told by my LFS that its commen for the tails to go "Manky" after a while...... pity really as they were really bright!

Looking at your stock i'd guess it was your tetra's that ate your guppies tails. they're fin nippers so thats why they'll chase fancy or long tailed guppies. They're tails shouldn't go "manky" unless they are nipped. i.e. without your tetra's your guppies "should" still have immaculate fins!

Hi...Just so you know...Melafix is extremely safe to use...ive used it in conjunction with pimafix to treat for bacteria and my fish are healthy, females are dropping healthy fry and all water stats are perfect. I think its actually promoted plant growth as the banana lillies are booming with height. Using just melafix alone will combat bacteria and help stop fungas growth. So i would treat it because when fungas hits its harder to combat. If you treat at first signs it might help. IMO most small type fish that have tails nipped generally develop some form of fungas.. I had a male guppy and his tail split and kept tearing until it broke away and then he developed small fungas spots on the edge of the tear. He then developed dropsy. sadly he's in fish heaven.

They say its freezin cold in fish heaven...and we humans think its humane to cull in this matter. Joke!! I wrap mine in paper towel and then freeze. At least my heaven bound fishies have blankets. OMG!!! I'm a nutter tonight.. Srry!

On a more exciting note...one of my guppies had 18 fry today...well 18 that i know of..who knows how many are hiding in main tank. I tried filming it but sadly the lighting was shocking and I couldn't really see anything worth watching. I could without the camera though. It was exciting indeed. :good:
