Hi,

I went to Wal-Mart this morning and got a few more beautiful fish (I absolutely love them!). I talked to the girl there about breeding, and she told me my male fish would die if I did so.

I didn't doubt her or anything since I wasn't really sure. But is this correct? Will the male/female fish die after breeding? I know if something's wrong, the spawned fish can die, but I've never heard the actual male/female fish do.

Thanks so much!

i'm not a breeder, but i'm pretty sure they dont die, unless one of them gets badly beaten up in the prosses

Just another stupid walmart employee.

No, They dont die after breeding.

Unless you do something wrong in the process.

If your interested in breeding i suggest you read the pinned articles first.

Nope, the male is the one that tends to the eggs and takes care of the new fry. If anyone dies in the spawning process, it's because the male or female was especially aggressive, but that should never happen if you do things right and keep an eye on them. :)

That being said, I don't recommend you breeding VTs or pet store CTs. You can end up with 100's of fry, and no homes for them. It will also be contributing to the "betta in a cup" mentality. Not a good idea. If you want to breed, I recommend you find a good quality pair. If you look around, you can usually find some pretty cheap. :)

Thanks everyone!

I'm going to see about getting cups I can use for 24 hours or so for the fishes and then I'll run to Petsmart or somewhere and get real tanks for them. Cups are okay as a temporary solution.

You should learn a lot more before attempting breeding.

Google it up; or research. Don't breed yet, take care of your fish first and see how they go.

First, the employee doesn't know wtf she's talking about.

Either fish could die, but it won’t be the act of breeding. If either fish were to die, it would be a result of the partner. Some females are overly aggressive and can kill the male (A friend had just such a female) and visa versa.

Should all theoretically go well during the breeding, the female should be removed and the male will tend to the fry for a few days until they start to swim, at which point it is YOU that must tend to them.

I would really research it a great deal if you are interested or you really could end up with dead fish.

Also, males and females should not be housed together.

OF COURSE THEY DON'T DIE...im a breeder...breeded for 3-4 years now...don't worry your male and female will be fine...your female will be REALLY REALLY tired after breeding...one question to ask you...do you know how to breed anyways? Privite note me if you don't...
