Are male Bettas happier in a community tank if kept with some female Bettas or will this not make a difference? I currently have a male betta in my tank and he constantly hides. I've had him for 1 week and have not seen him eat anything yet.

Any ideas?

A new large tank can be overwhelming. Too many things going on in such a wide open space. Maybe put him in a 1 gallon with tank water and let him get acclimated to his new surroundings and owner. Bettas, males for the most part, are solitary creatures. After he gets used to you and seems pretty calm (could take a week or month or two), then try him in the main tank.

in my opinion i think bettas are such special individual creatures that putting them in with other fish is just something i wouldn't consider. they deserve to be the main attraction. of course it can be done and everyone feels different about this so to each their own. ;)

You shouldn't have females in the tank with the male unless it is enormous or if you are breeding them.

Just wait for your guy to get acclimated to his surroundings and he'll cheer up.

Is he eating, by the way?
