Would a group of 7-8 black neons be okay with a male betta in a heavily planted 10 gallon tank? They were suggested to me as an alternative to some other options and I really like the look of them. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with them and if they tend to nip fins.

Personally i dont have exp with black neons but other tetras such as glow lights, platinum, lemons, neons, rosey, white skirts and congo tetras all the above seem to be ok with mine (i wouldnt go for white skirts as males have long flowing fins ive just got lucky)

What colours ur betta? Cause we may be able to find a fish that colours compliment your betta making it look brighter and stands out more

The ones i wouldnt suggest in my list are congos & white skirts . White skirts dicussed above and congos get BIG lol :)

I kept mine with 8 Black Neons and I experienced no problems at all. I am also trying to rehome the same Black Neons as closing the tank down. If you are near by, you are welcome to them ...

Compatibility wise, they should be fine. I personally wouldn't keep them in tanks under 15 gallons as they're highly active, but maybe that's just me. Alternatively, you could look into Chilli Rasboras, Ember Tetras, Galaxy Rasboras and male endlers - they're a little smaller and tend to do better in 10 gallon tanks from what I've heard.

I've been looking at endlers and may well do that...they're quite striking. I'm also not opposed to upgrading the tank. My betta is a really nice purple- I was thinking the neons because they wouldn't compete too much with him.

I'm in New Jersey (southern Jersey, Gloucester County area)

If you really wanted 'blue' neons instead of the black ones, you could always try them - I've done it before and it worked fine compatibility wise, but then again, its always all down to the individual betta. Endlers might go nicely if he's purple. I think chilli rasbora and a red/pink sort of colour from what I've seen, maight make a nice contrast?

The chili rasbora are very nice...now I've got even more options to agonize over! I really don't want to do the regular neon tetras...they're pretty, but so common and seem more frail than many fish.

With the endlers...Fosters and Smith has some that are hybrids. Any idea if they would be bigger as adults than a standard, nonhybrid endler? I don't want to get them if they would end up being closer to a fancy guppy size as adults.

Are they hybrids with guppies? Its possible that they may grow larger if so, you may want to ask them this. Alternatively, if you were to go for endlers, you may be able to find them online and some lfs will take orders too.

They have fancy guppy tails, so I believe so. I know my LFS doesn't carry them and doesn't do orders. I'd have to get them off aquabid or ebay I guess. I'm really leaning more to the chilia rasboras.

I don't blame you - I'd get some if I had space or money for another tank. I don't know a whole load about them, but I'd make a logical guess that 6 might work in your 10g with the betta. I'd get some more 'senior' advice to check this if you're going to go for them.

Are there any other lfs around you? If not, I'd definitely post an ad on the classified forums and you're right on aquabid + ebay. Chilli rasboras aren't commonly found from what I gather, so if your lfs is the type which tends to carry only the more common fish, you're unlikely to see them in there.

I have weird luck with my LFS. It's a huge store with hundred of tanks...but they NEVER have a single fish I'm looking for in stock. I swear I could go in and ask if they have say, neon tetras, and they will be mysteriously sold out. It's the strangest, most frustrating thing.

I now keep my Betta with Vietnamese Cardinals. If you can get them, they are gorgeous little fish and look great in a planted tank.
